Excellence in Leadership

    1/3

    Leadership vs. Management

The difference between leadership and management

The term leadership and management are often interchanged and in most leadership roles management and leadership skills are both required to be fully effective.

There are, however, some differences and whilst you may be both a leader and a manager it is important to understand which hat you are wearing in each circumstance if you want to achieve the optimal outcome.

Leadership involves motivating and inspiring people to contribute to the group's success. Leadership focuses on setting a new direction or vision and requires trust from followers so that they are willing to do what a leader is asking of them.

Management is about controlling and directing people or resources to achieve specific objectives. Management ensures day-to-day operations are carried out efficiently and involves control over subordinates.

Both leadership and management are needed to drive successful outcomes and to achieve the strongest possible outcome organisations need their leaders and managers to be effective and focused.

    WHY LEADERSHIP MATTERS

The leadership culture within an organisation will either unlock the potential within your people and drive greater success, or stifle innovation and commitment which may hinder success.

Employee happiness is contagious which in turn drives greater motivation and commitment; conversely poor or ineffective leadership has the opposite effect and negatively impacts what your organisation is seeking to achieve.

How leaders act and behave sets the tone and climate for everyone working in an organisation.

    WHY LEADERSHIP MATTERS

Effective leadership forms the foundation of success, how leaders engage and influence teams will directly determine a range of success measures:

Employee engagement is critical to gaining the commitment of everyone to work towards a common  goal. How happy, valued and motivated your people are will directly translate to how well goals are achieved and standards maintained. Leaders directly drive employee engagement by how they act and treat others.

Great leaders create positive climates where their people can thrive which positively impacts wellbeing and significantly reduces instances of absence.

The cost and impact of high employee turnover is well documented and people often state their reason for leaving an organisation is their manager or leader. Great leaders help to reduce talent leaving your organisation and therefore help to maintain productivity.

A cohesive leadership culture creates consistency, teams knowing how valued and respected  they are deliver higher and more consistent customer experiences. This will help to build and maintain loyal customer bases and brand integrity.

Engaged, motivated and valued employees demonstrate greater commitment to achieve shared financial goals, whether it is giving careful consideration to how resources can be maximised or how income can be generated and maintained. Employees typically exceed financial targets where they experience strong and consistent leadership.

Almost all organisation goals require everyone in the workforce to contribute towards them in some way, great leaders bring out the potential in each person to deliver the maximum contribution, meaning goals are more likely to be met and exceeded.

What are the results of transformational leadership

The reason many leaders strive for a transformational leadership style is because it delivers real, tangible results. It has been proved to stimulate innovation and performance for the leader and follower, and a 2013 study by the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine also found that it also leads to increased well-being amongst employees. It’s a win-win, benefitting the employee, the leader and the organisation.
